Pearl & Ruby

I've been out a few times but missed making entries. Rather than try to create entries for those old drops, I am just going to pick up starting with today.
So here goes.
I put Pearl and Ruby on a hot one in the corn. They caught up to it and were fighting a little. They are too samll to kill a coon on the ground so I walked out in the corn to them. The coon made it's getaway when I got close. Ruby made a loop and picked up the track. She worked it to the woods and treed weakly. Pearl was confused and wouldn't commit to the tree. I saw the coon.
This was a very nice job by Ruby. I've seen lots of dogs screw up a chase like this down on the river. Hopefully Pearl learned a little bit from her sister tonight.

Pearl & Ruby

Dale came down with Ruby. Walked the corn, spotted a coon and knocked it out. Pearl and Ruby struck a while later and ended up treeing on the same tree. Sent them on, they treed by the parking lot and had one. I'll hunt Ruby and Pearl this summer. They make a nice tema and should be lots of fun.

Back up top

Took Roy to the field on Pioneer trail. He struck and treed in a few minutes. I had shorts tonight to keep the noise down. Good thing, it was hiding & took me a long time to hit. When I got back to the truck I locked my keys in the dog box. I finally pried it open far enough to see them and hook them with a stick. I have spares somewhere but I've forgotten where. The gang of one that can't shoot straight still survives.

Where it all began

Took Roy to the field on Pioneer trail about 11:00 pm. and put him in the middle of to the east edge. He headed north along the edge and started open. I headed up and listened as I neared his position. I could tell he was having trouble settling in. I saw why when I arrived. There was a fence between Roy and the tree with the coons. I dispatched 3 coons. Looks like there are plenty more raiding this field. I'll have to keep on this field for a few days.

Warm up

Jack caught a coon rading the bird feeder. I took it up to the farm for a training session. Dale and Mark brought their dogs to run with Billy's. It was still hot at 11:00. The dogs ran across the open ground and then started opening in the woods. I'm not sure who treed first. The coon was up in a tree that rose up out of a tangled mass. Ruby was the only dog actually looking at the coon. The other dogs were barking up where I assumed the coon had climbed. It's kind of funny to see Billy's old lab with the coonhounds. Sage won't be left behind when we load up. She always takes control of any coons on the ground. The little dogs seemed shy around Sage tonight and gave her extra room. Only Roy got in there and fought with her. Boy is Roy ever fat.
Seever called & listed off the places with early corn. I guess I'll be working next week. I think I'll borrow Ruby and Pearl for a few weeks. Roy is so fat I don't think he'll be able to handle too much.
