I don't know why, but I felt sorry for Mabel and took her up to the kids place.
We sent her and Pearl south into the coyote ridge. Sure enough Mabel opened ran while & then was gone, probably coyote. Pearl hunted around but never struck. I thought I heard Mabel so we drove around. Mabel was treed in the next section. I got her and the coon. She had been treed about 45 minutes I figure. Pearl had just gone home & was in the yard already, good dog.
I can't believe that dog still hunts like this at 12 years old.
I could probably still nite hunt her this spring if I felt like it.
Driving home I hit a deer at about 45 mph.
I can still drive it but it needs a lot of repair.
Sent Nitro and Pearl west from the kids place. Nitro struck, ran along the edge of the corn, across the road and treed in the oak woods. He was on a hollow tree. I spotted a coon in the same woods from the road and decided to send the dogs back in. They struck right away but backtracked, probably my fault for walking them past the tree. Nitro treed deep on what looked like a slick tree after I had given him a warning tone. I whipped him a little and led him back to the tree with the coon in it. He grabbed the tree right away. I actually think he might have understood that he went the wrong way & this was a good lesson. Pearl came in and backed him a few minutes later. Sage, the fram kids lab ran all the way out to the tree when she heard us.
I was beat and called it a night. I'll wait until next week to take Nitro out again now because of deer opener.
